“When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” ~ Elbert Hubbard
There are times when life challenges us. Times when it can feel like our vital force has been squeezed right out of us. This was my experience through a financially trying time, while struggling with the idea of cutting back on expenses. However, with good fortune, I was offered a room to rent in a beautiful southern California home.
My pride aside, the interim move presented me with a completely new perspective. To this I give thanks to the lovely “lemon” and to my understanding friend Ray.
Although I have heard the phrase “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” many times before, when Ray said it with zest and a warm smile while in his kitchen surrounded by lemons from the backyard tree, it took on a whole new meaning. One I have come to embody.
If we are living, life will challenge us. Yet, with that said, I was not always able to appreciate the opportunities for growth that life often provides in the form of what appears to be an obstacle. Thanks to the lemon, I am infused with a new perspective and over the years have grown to realize that like the lemon, we live our lives in cycles from seed, to blossom, to harvest, and back to seed. The lemon reminds us that we are naturally abundant with fruitful ideas, and that – when life puts us in a squeeze – we can choose to become something new. We can choose to become empowered.
Bright as sunshine, we have the lemon to encourage us to live life to the fullest. So, when life hands you lemons, create! Grow! Be! Get in the kitchen of your life and express yourself as something new. Don’t allow life’s challenges to sour the situation. Start cooking and add your own sweetness to the mix. Don’t just make lemonade, but lemon everything…lemon bars, lemon meringue pie, lemon chicken, lemon marinades, lemon tea…You get the idea. 🙂
The next time you look at a lemon, make a commitment to remind yourself of how abundantly lush your life can be! We’re all waiting to hear your recipe!
